Cartagram's lead cartographer, Steven Gordon, has been designing and producing maps for over 20 years. He has also co-authored four editions of the Illustrator Wow! Book (published by Peachpit Press).
Cartagram solves clients' map needs by design. Literally. We believe that every map has something to say, and therefore deserves a design that speaks to its users (and speaks well for the ad agency, CVB, city, magazine, web designer or tourism organization that publishes it).
Your Cost
After you've submitted an RFQ (Request For Quote), we develop an estimate that depends on how much content we add to your map. A map that shows highways and arterials, for example, will cost less than a map that shows every city street. Special features, like an index or a terrain image, also affect cost.
Because each map is custom-built, we can customize the map to your budget.
Map Production
We begin by acquiring geographic data, either from your city, county, state, federal or from a commercial source. Once we layout out the map, we'll send you a PDF or JPEG proof of the map so you can verify map size, area coverage, and general design. As the map progresses, we'll send follow-up proofs. You'll have a chance to review and approve the map design. (That's part of what makes our maps "custom maps.")
Changes & Corrections
Errors that we've caused will be corrected at no charge. Simple changes, like adding a couple towns or a few more attractions, or changing colors, will be performed at no charge.
More involved changes will be charged at the rate of $50/hour. These may include: • layout - changing the dimensions of the map • area coverage - adding more areas to the map than originally planned • information - adding more information to the map than originally planned • other changes that take us more than a few minutes to perform.
Getting A Proof
If you've arranged for one, we'll generate a paper proof of the map at the end of production. Of course, once you've reviewed the proof, you may have changes or corrections to suggest. We'll incorporate your suggestions and then ship you (or your designated printer) the files (including fonts).
Who Owns The Map?
You do! Because you own all rights to the map, you're free to republish, change or make custom versions of the map. Many of our clients use the artwork in-house to make excerpts or variations of the map to support their clients or members. And we'll be glad to give you an estimate for updating or producing derivative versions of the map.
